What to See in Asturias: Beaches & Restaurants | Casa Selmo

Asturias is not just a destination; it’s a feeling that stays with you. When our guests cross the threshold of Casa Selmo—a house with over 120 years of history—the most frequent question is: “Where can we experience the most authentic Asturias?”

In this article, we share our "notebook of secrets": from wild beaches to the traditional llagares (cider mills) where authentic food and cider take center stage.

Beaches to Fall in Love With (Off the Beaten Path)

While Asturias has famous sandy shores, we prefer to recommend those with that special magic of the Cantabrian Sea:

Xivares Beach (7 km away): This is our number one recommendation for its proximity and beauty. It is the perfect spot for a quick getaway if you want to feel the sea breeze without straying too far from the peace of the house.

Bañugues and Verdicio (11-12 km): These coves are the ideal refuge for those seeking postcard-perfect sunsets. Verdicio, in particular, offers an impressive dune landscape near the iconic Cabo Peñas (Cape Peñas).

La Griega Beach (43 km): If you are traveling with family or are a history lover, this beach is unique. When the tide goes out, you can walk across the terrain and discover real dinosaur footprint fossils.

Gastronomy: Where to Eat Like a Local

In Asturias, sitting at the table is a ritual of togetherness. Forget about the tourist traps; here are our personal recommendations:

Authenticity just steps away

The Social Club Restaurant (1.5 km): Perfect for your everyday meals or a quick bite. Llagar La Hacienda de la Abuela (1.8 km): If you're looking for a weekend plan, this is our "must-visit" for Saturday or Sunday lunch. It’s a traditional cider house where the atmosphere is as authentic as the food.

Seafood Flavors in Tazones: This picturesque fishing village, 40 km away, is a seafood paradise. Our top recommendations are the seafood paella at El Uría or the fresh catch of the day at El Pescador.

The "Sacred Combo". If you are looking for the best fabada (traditional bean stew) and a cachopo you will never forget, Merendero de Covadonga (97 km away, ideal for a day trip) is the ultimate destination.

Selmo’s Advice: after a day of exploring, there’s nothing like returning to one of our rooms with a soul, where wood and stone invite you to absolute relaxation.
