Dog-Friendly Routes and Beaches in Carreño: The Ultimate Guide for You and Your Pup (No Drama, No Leashes)

If you’re one of those people who can't imagine a vacation without their dog, you probably know the feeling: you arrive at a beautiful spot but spend the whole day stressed out, looking out for "No Dogs Allowed" signs or constantly pulling on the leash along narrow sidewalks. Total buzzkill, right?

At Casa Rural Selmo, we believe that a great vacation is measured by how much your pup wags their tail. That’s why I’ve put together this quick guide with the best local spots where your furry companion can run free, sniff new things, and where both of you can enjoy the Asturian paradise exactly as you deserve.

1. Monte Areo: The Ultimate Doggy Amusement Park

Monte Areo is the green lung of Carreño and, honestly, the absolute favorite spot for all the local pups around here. It’s a massive natural area packed with dirt tracks, open meadows, and endless paths where it’s super easy and safe to let them off the leash to explore at their own pace.

The perfect plan: You can hike up directly from the house or take a quick five-minute drive. The trails are surrounded by oaks and eucalyptus trees that provide amazing shade, which is perfect if you’re visiting during the warmer months. While your pup burns off energy chasing sticks, you get to enjoy some incredible views of the coast and pass right by the ancient burial mounds of the necropolis.

2. Dog Beaches: Splashing Around (Even in the Summer)

Figuring out which beaches allow dogs during the high season is usually a massive headache. Luckily, very close to the house, we have a couple of perfect options where they can take a good dip without anyone giving you a hard time:

El Rinconín Beach (in Gijón): It’s about a 15 to 20-minute drive from the house. This is a city beach made of rock and sand that is open to dogs all year round. It’s the ideal spot if your pup loves to socialize, play with other dogs, and swim for a bit while you grab a drink along the promenade.

Cala Saliencia (in Cudillero): If you prefer something more wild, hidden, and untouched, this tiny pebble cove is also 100% dog-friendly 365 days a year. It’s perfect for a half-day trip combining a scenic drive and a coastal walk.

3. Pajama-Clad Strolls Right from Our Doorstep

You don’t need to jump in the car or plan a massive excursion every single day. The surroundings of El Valle are an absolute dream. We are surrounded by quiet country lanes, green fields, and traditional pathways (caleyas) where cars barely ever pass.

Heading out first thing in the morning—when the mist is still hanging low and everything smells like wet grass—and taking a peaceful stroll through the village with your dog off the leash is one of those little luxuries that makes you appreciate the slower pace of life.

Three Quick Things to Keep in Mind:

Water is sacred: Even though Asturias is famously green, there aren't many natural springs up on the higher parts of Monte Areo. Always pack an extra bottle of water just for them.

Let’s keep it clean: Help us protect this paradise by always picking up after your dog so the next pups who visit find it just as beautiful.

And the best part? When you get back from your adventure, our fully enclosed garden will be waiting for you. While you pour yourself a glass of local cider and relax in the sun, your dog can safely run those last few laps of the day before curling up fast asleep at your feet.
